Memoirs of a Martial Artist - a journey of healing
On July 13, 2013 I tore my acl during my Brown Belt test. This blog will document the day-to-day thoughts, feelings and actions as I heal my knee naturally.

Prolotherapy Injections Round Two
October 1, 2013
I got my second set of prolotherapy injections today. This
time, instead of 20 small numbing injections, we just went balls to the wall
and did about 10 or so big injections. It hurt worse but the pain was over
faster. When doc started on the plasma injections, I couldn’t feel a thing.
Richard took me for my, what’s becoming a ritual after a
traumatic experience (I seem to be having many of those lately), root beer
float. Once we got home and settled, we finished “The Walking Dead.” Holy crazy.
My knee is now swollen, achy and sore. I now know what to expect so it’s OK. Now, rest, wait and heal.
What's it Worth to be the Best?
September 30, 2013
Got one last workout in at the gym before my injections. I
headed up to my office/dojo and tied up loose ends throughout the day. One of
our instructors came in and we had a really nice talk about our martial arts training
(we both came from the same school) and my hesitation with going back.
I’m still frustrated. It bothers me that the person who threw
me didn’t take precaution when he did it. Months prior, he swept Richard and
hurt his leg also. Richard and the instructor I spoke to today both said that
it’s not that these guys don’t know how to be safe; it’s that they just don’t
care. Is that what I want to be affiliated with? What’s it really worth to be
considered “the best” when the best don’t seem to care about others?
Take-out and The Walking Dead
September 29, 2013
I’m preparing to be immobile for about five-days. I get prolotherapy
injections on Tuesday so I’m making a list of everything I need to get done
before I’m laid up and another one of everything I can do while I’m laid up. My
laziness began a bit early, however, when I received a notice from Netflix that
“The Walking Dead” was just released. Richard and I grabbed take-out Indian food
and sat on the couch for the rest of the night.

Bad Vegan, Karate Demo Mishap and Captain Hook
September 28, 2013
I slept in while Richard went to
the dojo to teach classes. Around noon, I went up to the dojo I train at to
watch some performances they were putting on. I walked in just in time to catch Richard doing his flying
kama and slashing his elbow open.
Afterwards, we went back up to our office/dojo to
bandage him up and get things we needed for a community event our Demo Team was performing at. We
had some time to kill before the demo so we went to an antique mall and then I
convinced him to go to Green, a vegan restaurant. OMG, he hated it! It was so
entertaining to watch him make faces of disgust every time he took a bite. Best
$18 ever!! We won’t be going back though.
After our really bad meal, we went
to Eldorado Park for the Luna Glow Dash and our Demo Team put on a great
performance! My knee was actually giving me issues so I had to go back to our
booth and sit down during the middle of it. I may have pushed it a bit too much.
When we got home, Netflix had sent me
Hook. Great flick, although I fell asleep half-way through!
